Apple’s New iOS to Block iPhone Unlockers

Apple revealed last Monday at its Worldwide Developers Conference that its new iOS 12 will render iPhone unlocking tools such as those made by Cellebrite and GrayShift useless.

Apple says the USB Restricted Mode, which requires users to unlock the iPhone with their passcode when connecting it via USB after it has not been unlocked for an hour, will be turned on by default in iOS 12 Beta. Security researcher Ryan Duff says that this will pretty much kill GrayKey and Cellbrite which are commonly used by law enforcement to break into seized iPhones.

Apple says that the security improvement requires the user to connect an accessory via lightning connector to the device while unlocked—or enter your device passcode while connected—at least once a week.
