Android Games Secretly Track User’s TV Viewing Habits

Several Android games were recently found to have been monitoring and recording the TV viewing habits of users using the device’s microphone.

Around 250 games including Pool 3D, Beer Pong: Trickshot, Honey Quest are said to be using a software from Alphonso, a startup which collects TV-viewing data for advertisers. The apps listen in to the audio from TV content that the user watches to build a profile which can be used by advertisers to deliver targeted ads.

In response to criticisms, Alphonso CEO Ashish Chordia says that the apps only collects data with the user’s explicit consent, and that it can be opted out anytime.
