Airbnb and Uber Might Take Advantage of India’s Aadhaar Biometric System

India — According to a report last Wednesday, unconfirmed sources claimed that Uber, Airbnb, and Ola are preparing to tap into India’s comprehensive Aadhar biometric database.

The claims detailed how Airbnb intends to use the biometric system to confirm user identity. Uber and local ride-sharing company Ola plan to use the database to gather customer lifestyle information and authenticate users who patronize the service.

In a Buzzfeed report last May, sources said an Uber official disclosed plans to use the Aadhar ID to conduct background checks on drivers. However, a representative from Uber recently denied the report, saying they are trying to find the source who made such claim.

As for Ola, the company has began requiring drivers to use their Aadhaar security codes. The new policy was implemented following an incident on July 7, where a driver used a false ID to kidnap a passenger.
