14 Nov Advocacy Group Warns NTIA of Privacy Violation Risks
US advocacy group Public Knowledge recently warned the National Telecommunications and Information Administration that harms caused by online privacy violations are currently not legally-cognizable and may go beyond pure financial losses.
Public Knowledge said that breaches may expose information that could cause embarrassment or reputational harm that can undermine an individual’s employment or social prospects. Harm can also come in the form of misinformation, or distortions of the public record that ultimately undermine the public’s trust in U.S. democratic institutions.
The group’s statements were made in response to the NTIA’s request for input on approaches to protecting privacy.
