15 Dec Academic Researchers Discover Data Breach on Website with 45 Million Users
Researchers from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) recently discovered a data breach on a website with 45 million users while testing a new tool called Tripwire.
The tool is able to check at regular intervals if a user-registration-based website has suffered a breach by monitoring an account it has registered on the website for unauthorized access. The researchers used the tool to register on around 2,300 sites, and found that an attacker had accessed one of the accounts which was registered to a website that had over 45 million users.
The researchers presented their work last November at the ACM Internet Measurement Conference in London, and published the Tripwire source code on GitHub.
