10 Year Challenge Likely a Data Mining Scheme, Tech Writer Says

Tech expert Kate O’Neill recently said on Twitter that the viral 10 Year Challenge is likely a data mining operation designed to teach a facial recognition algorithm to detect aging.

O’Neill said that having people post their pictures with almost exactly 10 years apart would be more efficient than having an algorithm mine Facebook for images based on exif data, which could generate a lot more noise.

Likewise, Lauren Rhue of Wake Forest School of Business warned that the 10 Year Challenge is an example of a scheme where users are made to willingly give up their personal data to a social media company.
