Zuckerberg-Backed School Program Raise Privacy Concerns

A number of students of a school program backed by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative recently complained that their privacy had been violated as sensitive data on their grades, disciplinary records, and demographics were collected by the program on a huge scale.

Around 100 students involved in a walkout earlier this month said that the Summit Learning System had severely damaged their education as it focused too much on isolated online work.

However, Catherine Madden, Summit’s senior director of communications assured that no personal data is being misused since Facebook does not have access to its platform, and the firm only data to help schools track student progress, protecting the data with “physical, technical, and administrative safeguards.
