WHOIS Owner Launches GDPR Lawsuit

ICANN, the nonprofit responsible for maintaining WHOIS, filed a GDPR-related lawsuit last week with the intention to gain clarity on the implementation of the new privacy rules.

The complaint was filed against EPAG, a European DNS registrar that stopped collecting WHOIS information due to fears of hefty GDPR fines. ICANN filed injunction proceedings to compel EPAG to  continue collecting all three sets of WHOIS data after the latter said that it would no longer collect administrative and technical contact information.

The lawsuit, which experts say may end up killing WHOIS in Europe, will serve to clarify the difference in interpretation of the law.
