Vet Organization Sues Pentagon for Mishandling Data Privacy

The Pentagon is being sued by the Vietnam Veterans of America for employing lax security measures on one of their websites which led to the exposure of their private data. The lawsuit, filed last week in a New York federal court, alleges that the Pentagon had violated the Federal Privacy Act.

Describing the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act’s website security as “shoddy”, the vet group says that sensitive information such as details of the troops military service can be accessed by anyone, including con artists and scammers, for any purpose. Veterans in particular, are a hot target since they receive a steady, guaranteed income from the government.
