11 Jan UIDAI Introduces Virtual Aadhaar to Address Privacy Issues
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) recently announced a new virtual ID system based on Aadhaar.
Although only a few details have been revealed, the UIDAI says that it may be implemented as early as March 1. It was reported that the virtual ID will be linked with the Aadhaar number, which will be linked to the individual’s profile. The virtual ID will be used for authentication purposes only so that the 12-digit Aadhaar number will not have to be shared.
The announcement comes after an expose by a Tribune reporter who claimed to have been able to purchase Aadhaar details online. However, the UIDAI staunchly denied that there was no leak, and even made a police complaint against the reporter.
