UIDAI Considers Dummy Numbers as Additional Security for Aadhaar

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is currently mulling the use dummy numbers as an additional security layer for every Aadhaar cardholder.

The framework, which had been discussed at senior levels at UIDAI, would involve the use of pseudo-numbers for transactions which cannot be traced back to uncover an individual’s personal data. Another proposal suggests the use of dynamic system which generates different numbers for use on different services, similar to one time passwords (OTP), since it will be more difficult to misuse the Aadhaar in the absence of a single number.

UIDAI has yet to give an official statement on the proposal.
