11 Nov TSA Mulls Use of Facial Recognition at Airports
The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights group, recently uncovered a plan by the Department of Homeland Security to further collect facial and iris scans across the nation.
The plan was found in the new proposal from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The TSA currently only collects fingerprints from applicants of the PreCheck program. However, the agency already ran a pilot program at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport and at Denver International Airport where the prints and a contactless fingerprint reader were used to verify PreCheck-approved travelers at checkpoints in both airports. It is said that the next step in this plan would be to expand checks to include face recognition, iris, and other biometric scans.
