03 May Top Data Watchdog Says Americans Envy EU Privacy Regulations
Giovanni Buttarelli, the European Data Protection Supervisor, recently remarked that the US’s days of isolation in terms of privacy regulations are about to end.
According to the top EU data watchdog, he found that a lot of US citizens and NGOs are now seeking stronger laws, because they see the difference in specific rights when an EU-based company uses their data compared to when a US company does it.
Buttarelli also said that as a member of the judiciary, he thinks surveillance should have a high degree of intrusiveness into the private sphere. However, in many cases the intrusion goes far beyond what is necessary in a democratic society and becomes counterproductive.
