12 Aug TalkTalk Fined £100,000 for Customer Data Breach
UK broadband provider TalkTalk was given a hefty fine of £100,000 by the Information Commissioner’s Office for putting 21,000 subscribers’ personal data at risk.
ICO’s investigation found out that the breach was carried out by rogue staff from Wipro, an Indian IT firm used by TalkTalk to resolve complaints and network problems. The Wipro employees accessed large amounts of personal customer data that included names, addresses and phone numbers via an online company portal.
Although ICO could not find evidence linking the incident to scam calls TalkTalk customers had been getting, the telco was still found to have breached data protection laws.
