Study Says 2.5 Million More Affected by Equifax Breach

A press release from Equifax issued last Tuesday revealed that an additional 2.5 million more Americans had been affected by the company’s massive security breach.

The findings came from a study conducted by Mandiant, a cybersecurity firm, which also included the impact on Canadian and UK citizens. The total number of individuals affected in the US now stands at 145.5 million, while in Canada it has been reduced to 8000. The number for UK has not yet been publicly revealed.

Equifax’s new CEO, Paulino do Rego Barros, Jr, also said in the press release that they are making every effort to be transparent. However, Lawrence Abrams of Bleeping Computer says that the show of transparency might be a little bit too late, and the delayed disclosure of the breach meant that the hackers had a month to analyze and use the data, potentially for identity theft.
