Strava Restricts Heatmap Access After Privacy Snafu

Last Tuesday, fitness app company Strava said that it will be restricting access to an online heat map which shows where Strava users conduct their fitness activities.

Strava made the changes after causing a massive privacy issue when its app inadvertently revealed the location of military presence in sensitive areas around the world.

Strava CEO James Quarles said that they will be launching a new version of the heat map that will not show street-level details to non-registered users. Areas will little activity will only be shown if a number of users upload their workouts for that area, and the map will be refreshed monthly to remove data that have been made private.
