06 Oct Sonic Says Malware Caused Breach, Customer’s Credit Card Info Found Underground
USA – Fast food chain Sonic recently divulged in a press release that the breach that hit the company was caused by malware, and that affected customers are eligible to a free identity theft protection service provided by Experian.
Sonic however, did not specify that the malware was used by criminals to steal data from their network. Security expert Brian Krebs found that the stolen credit card info ended up being sold in an underground market called Joker’s Stash.
IBM’s X-Force confirmed Krebs’ discovery in a blog post. Netsurion Global CISO John Christly also commented on the matter and warned retailers that they need to get proper protection, since cyber criminals may use PoS ransomware in future occasions.
