Singapore’s Public Facial Recognition Cameras Raise Privacy Fears

Privacy fears were stoked as Singapore’s GovTech recently announced the testing of surveillance cameras equipped with facial recognition technology which will be installed on top of around 100,000 lampposts across the city-state.

As part of its “Smart Nation” plan, GovTech revealed that the “Lamppost-as-a-Platform” pilot project is already scheduled for next year, and companies interested in providing technology have until May to register their interest.

While video surveillance networks are already commonplace in cities such as London and New York, some experts believe that Singapore’s may involve more extensive facial recognition.
