08 Mar Singapore Joins APEC Data Privacy System
Singapore recently became the newest member of the APEC Cross-Border Privacy Rules System, making it the sixth member along with Canada, Japan, Korea, Mexico and the United States.
The move, which is expected to boost e-commerce growth and protection of sensitive online consumer data in the region, confirms that Singapore’s personal data protection law is aligned with the system. This means that data including internet banking, health and travel records, social media posts or messages will be able to flow between economies with the assurance that it will not be accidentally disclosed or misused.
Singapore Personal Data Protection Commissioner Tan Kiat How says that the city-state’s entry into the system will enable certified Singapore businesses to tap into even more regional and global business opportunities, and also provide greater greater peace of mind for consumers who shop or use online services.
