17 Nov Session Replay Presents Significant Threat to Online Privacy
Several security researchers recently said that session replay scripts may pose a major privacy threat which is akin to someone looking over the user’s shoulder.
Researchers Steven Englehardt, Gunes Acar and Arvind Narayanan gave the statement after studying several session replay service providers including Yandex, FullStory, Hotjar, UserReplay, Smartlook, Clicktale, and SessionCam.
They found that the scripts don’t just collect data, but rather record activities like keystrokes, mouse movements and scrolling behavior, as well as the contents of the page. The recorded browsing session are then sent to third-party servers. However, users are not made aware by these websites that their activities are being recorded and shared.
