15 Dec Russian Website Streams Footage of Security Cameras in Canada
A dental office in Toronto was recently alarmed when it learned that the feed from its security camera was being live-streamed on a Russian website. Several experts noted that the incident highlighted a major privacy issue and could have constituted a breach of patient confidentiality.
It was also revealed by several media websites that hundreds of Canadian surveillance cameras in various locations such as living rooms and daycares are being streamed on sites like Insecam.com, which is based in Russia. Other sites such as Shodan and NestCam Directory, both based in the US, similarly stream such content.
These sites are said to target cameras and other IoT devices that use weak or factory-default passwords. On the issue, former Ontario Privacy commissioner Ann Cavoukian said that facilities like clinics and daycares should exercise better security as they have a responsibility to protect their patient’s privacy.
