Protect Yourself from Malware by Creating a Single File

While there is still no cure for the latest ransomware attack, a researcher said there may be a way to prevent infection by creating a single Windows file.

During the Petya ransomware investigation, Amit Serper, a security researcher from Cybereason found out that when a ransomware malware is executed on a system, it looks for a particular local file called perfc.dll. If it finds that file, it will exit and not encrypt the system.

The preventative measure involves creating a read-only file named “perfc”, without extensions, in the C:\\Windows folder. Other researchers added that creating a perfc.dat file is also likely to help.
