07 Dec Privacy International: Nobody is Taking Responsibility for Wiping Personal Data in Connected Cars
In a report published this week, Privacy International revealed that the sensitive personal data collected by connected cars from its users does not get deleted automatically, and it is still largely unclear who should be responsible for its deletion.
PI found that information in a smartphone, such as the user’s address, may be stored in the car’s infotainment system. Travel logs are also often retained, and these information are not deleted by car rental companies.
The car sharing and vehicle rental firms which PI rented cars from seem to suggest that the user is responsible for deleting the said data. PI’s solicitor general Millie Graham Wood says that there is no agreement which specifies a data controller, and this can be a problem when asserting one’s data privacy rights.
