Privacy Commissioner’s Report Reveals More on Inuvik Hospital Breach

Northwest Territories, Canada – It was revealed in the Information and Privacy Commissioner’s (IPC) annual report that  six staff members of the Inuvik Regional Hospital wrongly accessed patient information using the MediPatient system last 2016.

It was also discovered that the acts which breached patient privacy were committed regularly during breaks and walk-in clinics. The snooping incident prompted privacy commissioner Elaine Keenan-Bengts to make several recommendations, including the creation of the full-time position of Privacy Officer, as well as the reconfiguration of the MediPatient system.

Presently, only one of the six staff members had been terminated. The rest were only suspended without pay.
