Philippine Telcos Cooperate with NPC and PCTO to Observe Data Privacy Act

Manila, Philippines — The National Privacy Commission (NPC) and the Philippine Chamber of Telecommunications Operators (PCTO) arranged a discussion with telecommunication firms to address how the industry can properly implement the Data Privacy Act (DPA) of 2012.

The initiative came about after telecommunications firms sought to clarify the privacy rules, particularly how to approach public and private requests on personal data involving police investigations and credit collections.

One of the main concerns they brought up involved the cost of updating equipment to ensure DPA compliance. PCTO vice president Roy Ibay said the entire process will take time, since it would most likely change the structures of business stations.

The DPA was mandated to protect citizens’ private data when they engage with communication and information companies. The NPC is making sure all telecommunication firms are well-informed to implement the regulations.
