05 May Online Reputation Services Offer Costly Deletion of Personal Information Online
A USA Today reporter revealed this week that it is possible to delete one’s publicly available personal information using online reputation services such as DeleteMe. However, it was pointed out that the service can be costly and in some instances, may not be worth the price.
The reporter who tried the service said that DeleteMe charged around $129/year to delete information gathered by sites like Spokeo, White Pages and BeenVerified which offer detailed background reports on individuals which may include contact information, addresses, properties owned or leased, court and criminal records, liens, judgments.
Consumer privacy expert at the Electronic Frontier Foundation Gennie Gebhart says that all publicly viewable information about individuals are likely to have already been scraped by people-search websites.
