30 Aug NPC Tells Media to Balance Press Freedom and Privacy
In the DPO6 assembly last Tuesday, the National Privacy Commission (NPC) reminded attendees that a balance between press freedom and the right to privacy should always be preserved.
Ivy Patdu, the NPC Deputy Commissioner, told the media to observe principles of transparency, legitimate purpose, and proportionality. She mentioned that the only situation where there is no need to get consent from subjects is when covering a story for journalistic purposes on matters of public concern.
Patdu added that the media should also collect data in a non-intrusive manner that doesn’t violate privacy, and that they should be mindful of the information they disclose.
