NPC Tells Globe to Implement Stricter SIM Card Replacement Protocols

NPC Tells Globe to Implement Stricter SIM Card Replacement Protocols

Last Tuesday, Globe Telecom Inc. was ordered by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) to apply stricter protocols on replacement of SIM cards after it had received reports of subscribers falling victim to identity theft and fraud.

Globe has committed to implementing a 24-hour delay in the activation of newly-replaced SIM cards to subscribers who report a lost or stolen phone. This measure should prevent identity theft by giving the victims of a SIM-swap scheme enough time to respond to a notification of a SIM replacement request.

NPC chairman Raymund Enriquez Liboro says that the SIM card has become like a master key which can be used for all sorts of identity fraud, so the Commission is hoping that all telcos in the country will adopt similar stringent measures to protect the privacy interests of their customers.
