NPC Begins Facebook Investigation on Cambridge Analytica Breach

The National Privacy Commission announced last Friday that it has begun its investigation into Facebook’s data breach involving Cambridge Analytica which involved the personal information of around 1.2 million Filipinos.

The privacy watchdog sent a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg last April 11, informing the company that they will be investigated to determine if there had been any instances of violations to the Data Privacy Act. Outside of the US, the Philippines was found to be the top country affected by the unauthorized data scraping.

A Facebook spokesperson said that the company is fully cooperating with the NPC and reiterated that updates have made to make privacy tools easier to find, restrict data access on Facebook, and make terms and data policies clearer.
