17 Mar Ninth Circuit Panel to Work on LinkedIn Data Scraping Lawsuit
Last Thursday, a Ninth Circuit panel pored over the data scraping case involving LinkedIn and HiQ, a firm which sells employee and job seeker information to various companies.
LinkedIn attorney Donald Verrilli Jr. warned that upholding a previous ruling which says that LinkedIn cannot use the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act to block HiQ could have dire consequences for the free flow of information online.
However, U.S. Circuit Judge Marsha Berzon said that HiQ claims it is merely viewing publicly available data, and other websites may follow suit and restrict activities that promote research and learning if LinkedIn is allowed to block access to its public website.
