New App That Assesses Cellular Coverage Keeps User Data Private

Researchers at Rochester Institute of Technology recently announced that they have developed a new app called RIT Cellular Metrics which can measure the actual download speeds of mobile service providers in a particular area and also protect user identity.

Professor Clark Hochgraf said that they created the app to ascertain which carrier (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile) had the fastest connection speed at a given location and not just at a regional level.

The team says that their app does not harvest personal information from the device, unlike other similar apps. Hochgraf added that they wanted people to be able to take measurements without having to worry about their privacy.
