13 Sep National ID Card Treads Line Between Privacy and Security
Manila, Philippines – House Bill No. 5060, also known as the Filipino Identification System Act, was recently approved by the House of Representatives. The bill seeks to establish a single reference card that will be considered as valid identification for transactions with both government and private offices.
An opinion piece published by Inquirer yesterday that discussed the pros and cons of the said national ID system revealed a clause which states that the card should include data “deemed necessary” by the Philippine Statistics Authority. Critics of the bill say that this is a big privacy concern, but proponents have countered that the Data Privacy Act of 2012 is already a sufficient safeguard for the protection of individual privacy.
