Microsoft Ireland Privacy Case Brought to US Supreme Court

It has been reported that the US Supreme Court will now be handling the high profile privacy case involving Microsoft Ireland. Accepted last October 16, it is expected to generate a landmark decision that will affect the future of cloud computing and US national and international policy.

The case, which compels Microsoft to hand over email data stored in its Ireland servers to US authorities, is the first occasion after the Snowden case where a company refused to comply with data disclosure demands served by the US government. The ruling, which will come at a time of heightened public awareness on government access to online data, may force tech companies to create corporate subsidiaries to prevent the seizure of data outside the laws of the country where the subsidiary is situated.
