Malaysians Alarmed Over Reported “Massive“ Data Breach

Earlier this week, reports of a rumored “massive” data breach that may have affected the personal data millions of Malaysians caused a stir online.

An unknown source apparently provided information for the article that went up on Lowyat.net entitled “Personal Data of Millions of Malaysians Up for Sale, Sources of Breach Still Unknown”, which stated that the information was being sold for an undisclosed amount in Bitcoin. The article further said that the information would be particularly damaging to the telecommunications sector and mentioned the names of several major players.

The article has since been been taken down, and was replaced by a notice telling visitors to await for the official statement of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
