Major Security Holes Uncovered in Facebook’s WhatsApp

At the Real World Crypto security conference Wednesday, researchers disclosed a number of security flaws in popular encrypted messaging apps Signal, Threema, and WhatsApp. Among the three, it was shown that WhatsApp had the biggest security flaw since it could potentially allow hackers to infiltrate a private group.

The researchers from Ruhr University Bochum in Germany said that an eavesdropper would have to compromise WhatsApp’s servers. However, a cryptography professor at Johns Hopkins University who reviewed the research team’s work said that end-to-end encryption and the complexity of a system will not matter if everything boils down to trusting the server.
