Macron: Facebook, Google Now Too Big for Governance

Earlier this week, French president Emmanuel Macron said in an interview that Google and Facebook are becoming too big to be governed and suggested that the companies may need to be dismantled.

Macron commented that while the tech giants were welcome in France, they have also become too big to fail. Google had recently put up a new artificial intelligence research center in France which is part of an EU effort to catch up with China and the US in terms of AI.

However, Macron also warned that AI could possibly challenge democracy and open up a Pandora’s box of privacy issues. Because of this, he added that his goal was to create European sovereignty in AI, particularly in regulation, saying that if he doesn’t have a discussion with GAFA (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple), he will put himself in a situation where he could lose his sovereignty.
