21 Aug “Lip-reading” CCTVs May Soon be Spying on Shoppers Conversations and Shopping Habits
High street stores may soon feature “lip-reading” CCTVs that can record and interpret private customer conversations on products and services.
While security experts say that the technology will yield more “honest” market research data, privacy advocates are criticizing it for being creepy and totally irresponsible.
Jonathan Ratcliffe of CCTV.co.uk said that current visual speech recognition technology is ready for the next generation of CCTV systems. The technology had previously been used to help interpret what players at football matches are saying.
He adds that the technology is particularly useful since data gathered from customers who voluntarily participate in market research surveys are often inaccurate.
