IPT Ruling Lets EU Judges Decide on Legality of British Surveillance Powers

Last Friday, the Investigatory powers tribunal said that it is up to the European Court of Justice to decide whether the UK’s mass digital surveillance powers is legal.

Privacy International, the campaign group that brought the case, saw the ruling as a victory. However, the IPT also said that mass collection of communication data is a necessity for the protection of UK’s national security.

The ECJ had already ruled last December that it is illegal for governments to indiscriminately keep communications data.
