Indian Police Detains Suspect in Jio’s User Data Leak

Police arrested a man in Rajasthan last Tuesday for allegedly leaking details to Jio’s user database. The suspect, Imran Chhimpa, was traced via an IP address from a posted link that claimed to provide personal user details.

Jio is a telecom company run by India’s wealthiest man, Mukesh Ambani, together with Reliance Industries Ltd. In a statement last Monday, the company said it is working with the police to investigate the leak, which could be the first wide-scale data breach from an Indian telecom firm.

A post on Frendz4m dated July 5 contained a the link to, claiming that anyone can access personal user details with a Jio connection. The person who shared it used the handle, “imranchhimpa.”

Reporters tried to reach Chhimpa for a comment, but his mobile phone was switched off. Police also refused to give details on whether there are other suspects in the Jio cyber breach.
