Indian Government to Create Law to Address Misuse of Personal Data

Reports have revealed that the Indian government will be rolling out a data protection law that will address the misuse of private user information by tech and social media companies.

A source from the IT Ministry of India said that a high-level committee is scheduled to submit a report by the end of 2017 which can either recommend the creation of a new law, or an enabling provision in the current IT Act.

This action from the government was prompted by concerns including tech company’s monetization of  user data, and security threats posed by Chinese companies.
