08 Sep India SC Seeks Google, Twitter, & Union Government Views on Cross-Border Data Sharing & Privacy
Last Wednesday, the Supreme Court sent notices to Twitter, Google, and the Union government, seeking their legal stance on a petition regarding data-sharing with cross-border corporations in violation of the right to privacy.
Petitions filed against WhatsApp is being heard by a five-judge bench led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra. The two students who filed the petitions are alleging that the Facebook-acquired messaging platform is sharing all the data it has on its users with its parent company.
Kapil Sibal, WhatsApp’s senior advocate, initially denied that there was any sharing being made with third parties. However, he later on admitted at the insistence of Justice Sikri that information was indeed being collected and monetized.
