ICT Sector to Dissect New Australian Data Breach Laws

Earlier this week, Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) CEO Robert Fitzpatrick made some positive remarks on the country’s newly rolled out Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) legislation, calling it an important step forward.

The laws, which present a major change to the Privacy Act, impose mandatory investigation and notification requirements applicable to organisations with existing personal information security obligations under the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act), and those with an annual turnover greater than $3 million with some limited exceptions.

Fitzpatrick said that responding to breaches is not solely a technical issue for CIOs, but a matter of concern for all levels of an organization’s management.
