14 Mar ICANN Holds Weeklong Meeting to Determine Fate of Whois
Nonprofit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is currently holding a week long meeting in Puerto Rico to tackle the issue facing the public WHOIS database which may be made illegal by the upcoming GDPR.
Sources say that WHOIS may be divided into two tiers, with one open to the public, and another only to police, researchers and other organizations with legitimate concerns.
ICANN global domains division president Akram Atallah said that they are seeking to keep as much of the policy unchanged while being compliant with the new regime. Atallah added that they are also asking data protection agencies in Europe for their advice regarding the plan.
