27 Feb Home Affairs: Decryption Proposal Won’t Undermine Legitimate Encryption
Australia’s Department of Home Affairs secretary Michael Pezzullo recently defended the government’s new proposal on communications decryption, saying that it will not undermine legitimate encryption.
When asked for specifics by Australian Greens Senator Jordon Steele-John, Pezzullo insisted that the legislation is not a backdoor, and it only seeks to balance societal needs for encryption. He further explained that it only needs to be made available for users who do not plan to misuse it.
The secretary further said that they still prefer to have a dialogue and consultation with industry, and that the legislation will only be introduced if new Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton sees it to be necessary.
