HK Education University Found to Have Violated Data Protection Laws

Hong Kong – The Privacy Commissioner revealed that the Education University had violated data protection laws when it allowed the release of CCTV stills that showed two individuals suspected of putting up posters insulting a Government official.

An inquiry into the incident found that the university’s security staff sent the stills to 13 other employees and a student thru WhatsApp in order to identify the suspects.

However, the security staff did not tell the recipients to keep the images confidential, which were later published in some newspapers. The university vowed to formulate policies and guidelines concerning use of CCTVs and the protection of information privacy, after being criticized by the privacy watchdog.
