HBO Hack Said to Have Leaked 7 Times as Much Data Compared to Sony Hack

Reports last Wednesday stated that the recent HBO hack involved about 1.5TB of data, which is estimated to be seven times the sum of data leaked in the notorious Sony data hack.

In addition to stealing and uploading episodes of shows like Room 104, Baller, and Game of Thrones, the attackers are also suspected to have taken financial files, customer details, and company emails.  HBO is providing credit tracking for employees that might be affected.

The hackers did not ask for a ransom, which made authorities uncertain of their intentions with the information. HBO CEO Richard Plepler’s email to employees said they do not think their email system has been fully breached, though investigation is in progress.

The FBI and cybersecurity company Mandiant are currently taking the lead in the probe. Mandiant has also been involved in the Sony hack investigation.
