Hackers Use Spy Malware to Target Syrian Gov’t Enemies

Syrian government-backed hackers are reportedly targeting political enemies using Android surveillance malware distributed in trojanized versions of messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram.

Unveiled by researchers at security firm Lookout at the recent Black Hat Europe conference, the SilverHawk malware is thought to have been in operation since mid-2016 and might have been used to secretly record audio, taking photos, downloading files, monitoring contacts, tracking location.

The Syrian Electronic Army group, which works with the support of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, has a history of hacking and defacing websites including that of the US army and the Associated Press’s Twitter account.
