Germany’s Federal Cartel Office Launches Probe on Facebook “Extorting” Personal Data

Facebook is under suspicion of compelling its users to provide information for targeted ad placement.

Germany’s Federal Cartel Office has launched a probe investigating if Facebook is indeed using its influence to force users into accepting terms and conditions they may not fully comprehend.

A lawyer at Heuking Kühn Lueer Wojtekm, Frederik Wiemer, accused Menlo-based Facebook Inc. of ‘extorting’ information from users. And that those who disagree will be denied service and access to the social network community.

The German inquiry is set to test the boundaries of the European Union’s antitrust law that issued penalties to several U.S companies including a fining Apple Inc €13bn in back taxes and more recently a €2.4bn fine after suspected anti-competitive behavior from Google.
