Facebook Suicide Detection Tool Blocked in EU for Data Protection Issues

Reports this week revealed that Facebook was unable to roll out its suicide detection feature in Europe as it has been found to be in conflict with EU’s data protection laws.

The tool sought to use artificial intelligence to spot users who might be at risk of suicide by monitoring specific keywords in their posts and comments. A spokesperson for the social media giant revealed that because of EU laws strict Data Protection Directive, and the upcoming General Data Protection Regulations, the AI update will be rolled out worldwide except in Europe.

Facebook already has a system in place for manually reporting persons at risk, but the company says that a lot of red flags still go unreported.
