21 Mar Facebook Scandal Prompts Privacy Advocates in India to Seek Stronger Data Privacy Laws
The topic of data privacy laws in India received greater attention recently because of the issue involving the harvesting of Facebook user data by analytics firm Cambridge Analytica.
Privacy advocates such as Apar Gupta said that although the Election Commission had issued guidelines to protect election integrity, restrained exit polls, and required candidates to disclose social media handles, the government has not shown any further initiative on the matter of data privacy laws in the country.
Gupta added that India’s voting process may potentially be vulnerable to influence of social media like in the US, citing how Cambridge Analytica had used Facebook data to affect the outcome of the 2016 US Presidential elections.
